Create a Photo Collage Wall

  •
  •

A photo collage wall is a quick way to decorate empty wall space—by using photos and frames of different sizes and textures. You don’t even need a professional decorator to help. With a few simple household tools, some photos, and frames, you can create one by yourself in 1 weekend.

FIND A GOOD SPACE.

Find an empty wall space in your house that’s at least 2 ft. x 3 ft. Walk around and look for the best option. Don’t forget hallways, staircases, ledges, fireplaces—even bathrooms. Then measure your space, so you know how much you’ve got to work with.

CHOOSE THE PHOTOS.

You don’t just have to choose photos of people. Mix in photos of vacation spots, nature, landscapes, or flowers—to create a warmer overall “look.”

CHOOSE THE FRAMES.

Photo collages work best visually when the frames all follow a single theme. For example, you might try:

  • 1 color—varying shades
  • Different sizes—same color
  • Different styles—same color

PLAN YOUR DESIGN.

Lay out the photos on a table or floor space that matches the wall space size you measured. Move them around. Walk away. Look again. Adjust. Repeat. Try using: symmetrical designs, shapes (like squares or ovals), angles, cascades, straight lines.

MOCK UP THE WALL POSITION.

Once you have a good “test” layout going on your table or floor, see how it looks on your wall—before you hammer the nails. Tape pieces of paper to the wall that approximately your frame sizes, and make any final adjustments to layout.

NAIL AND HANG.

Once your “mock” paper frame layout looks good, hammer the nails right through the paper. Remove the paper and tape, and hang your frames. Voilà!
